Suffolk and Norfolk Job Centres prepare for Sizewell C

Sizewell C is working with Job Centres across Suffolk and Norfolk and charity partners Access Community Trust and Inspire Suffolk to ensure local people are ready to work on the project.

Today, over 50 work coaches working for Job Centre Plus in Suffolk joined the Sizewell C team to hear about the project Jobs Service and how it will help people take their next steps towards employment.

At peak construction over 7,800 roles will be carried out on the Sizewell site and a third of those are anticipated to be filled by local people.  The team behind the Sizewell C Jobs Service, an online portal for the jobs and apprenticeship opportunities on the project, are running bespoke training on the service so that Employment Coaches can swiftly match local people with jobs and also support for those who are not quite ready for work.

Sarah Hancock, Sizewell C HR Director, said:

“We are looking for a diverse range of roles to be filled from caterers to crane drivers and technicians to welders.  That is why we are working with local colleges and job providers to ensure we have the skills required when work starts.  Sizewell C offers long-term well-paid employment, and we want to make the most of this for local people.  We are also committed to provide pathways into work for those who, for whatever reason, may have faced challenges securing employment.”

Jobcentre Plus will work closely with the Sizewell C Team and the Jobs Service to prepare and match our customers to the opportunities available over the many years this project will develop, exciting times for Suffolk”

The Sizewell C Jobs Service was launched following the success of the programme at Hinkley Point C, the first of the new nuclear power stations in the UK, which is five years into construction and has delivered hundreds of job opportunities for people in the South-West.

The Planning Inspectorate submitted a recommendation on the Application for Sizewell C to the Secretary of State on 25 February and a final decision is expected in Spring.

Sizewell C has already put in place –

•  A Jobs Service with some workers starting with HPC before transferring to SZC Sizewell C Jobs Service
• An employment and training prospectus that provides a pathway from education and training through to jobs with the project
• An interactive careers platform to support Young Sizewell C subscribers keen to know more about the jobs on the project
• Early apprenticeships being placed in welding, pipe fitting, project controls, formwork carpentry and surveying
