Our project

Clean electricity made in Britain

Sizewell C will provide decades of clean, reliable electricity for around 6 million homes. Together with wind and solar, it will help to build a greener energy system and protect households from high gas prices.

Majority owned by the UK Government, Sizewell C is a British nuclear project which will strengthen our energy security while providing thousands of great jobs across the country.

Our project is already helping to spread prosperity and change lives for the better in East Suffolk. We are creating huge new opportunities for local people and businesses. At the same time, we are listening carefully to residents and working hard to reduce the disruption caused by the construction of the power station.

Thousands of great jobs and training opportunities

Our project will support 70,000 jobs, including 7,900 in Suffolk, and we will employ at least 1,500 apprentices.
Sizewell C will help to change lives for families and communities across the UK, including in places that are crying out for skilled work. We have active policies to promote a diverse workforce and to spread opportunities as widely as possible.

Environment

Looking after nature

The biggest threat to nature is climate change. Clean energy from nuclear will reduce carbon emissions and help to protect the environment. At Sizewell C, we are creating stunning new habitats for nature.

We are going well beyond legal requirements to mitigate the impacts of construction. Our plans will result in more local biodiversity, more nature recovery and more rewilding in the East of England.

1. October 2024
Autumn Budget

The Autumn Budget announces £2.7bn commitment to Sizewell C and says Final Investment Decision will be in the 2025 Spending Review.

2. June 2024
Commitment to Sizewell C

Labour General Election manifesto commits to Sizewell C.

3. May 2024
Regulator grants Nuclear Site Licence to Sizewell C

First nuclear site licence issued by the Office for Nuclear Regulation since Hinkley Point C’s licence in 2012.

4. January 2024
UK Government invests additional £1.3b

The funding will help Sizewell C continue to prepare for full construction.

5. January 2024
Development Consent Order triggered

Green light for formal construction to begin.

6. September 2023
Private investment process begins

The UK Government launches the formal process to raise private investment for Sizewell C.

7. August 2023
£341m government allocation for SZC

This funding allocation is to speed up preparation of site for construction, procurement of key supply chain components, and to expand the workforce.

8. March 2023
Environment permits granted

The Environment Agency grants permits which are required before construction can begin.

9. December 2022
Government invests nearly £700m

The Government agrees to invest in the project becoming a 50% shareholder alongside EDF.

10. July 2022
Development Consent Order approved

Approval of the DCO comes after the Planning Inspectorate says the benefits of the project “strongly outweigh the impacts”.

11. March 2022
New nuclear funding legislation passed

MPs vote overwhelmingly in favour of legislation to introduce Regulated Asset Base (RAB) funding for nuclear.

12. January 2022
Government invests £100m

The UK Government agreed a land option agreement with EDF to fund further development of the project.

13. May 2020
Application for planning permission submitted

Our application for a Development Consent Order (DCO) was more than 50,000 pages long.

14. October 2012
First of four rounds of local consultation begins

Our consultations in the region led to engagement with more than 10,000 people and organisations.
