Sizewell C has announced a new partnership with the Woodbridge Tide Mill Museum, helping to safeguard the Mill’s future for generations to come.
Museum trustees have agreed a three-year corporate membership with the nuclear power project – the first of its kind in the trust’s history.
The Woodbridge Tide Mill is the only operational tide mill in the UK still milling and selling flour. The museum offers visitors a unique glimpse into its 854-year history, and its exhibits showcase ancient machinery and the traditional techniques still used to process locally grown grain.
The museum, a Grade I listed building, is currently fundraising £60,000 to urgently repair its exterior. Years of exposure to salty water, rain, wind, and sun have weathered its old wooden cladding.
Ian Jacob, Chair of the Woodbridge Charitable Trust, said: “As a fellow energy producer, we embrace Sizewell C’s enthusiasm to work with us in educating and entertaining. The Mill faces enormous challenges in maintenance, repair, and volunteer shortages, along with a constant need for funding. This corporate membership will be key to keeping the Mill running for future generations.”
Under the scheme, Sizewell C employees will enjoy free access to the Mill and, through volunteering, can engage in all aspects of the Mill’s activities – from guiding guests and milling flour to learning specialist skills to help maintain the machinery.
Marjorie Barnes, Head of Regional External Affairs and Development at Sizewell C, said: “We’re really pleased to be the first corporate member of the Tide Mill and know our workforce and their families will enjoy accessing this very special historical building. We want to make Sizewell C a great place to work and will provide a range of activities for our employees to enjoy in their spare time, whether that’s sport or singing or a visit to a local landmark.”
Ian Jacob added: “Sizewell C is a major employer, and we’re impressed by its commitment to encouraging staff to support and volunteer at the Mill. Time and skills donated by the public are absolutely vital to the Mill’s continued success.”
Located along Tide Mill Way on the scenic banks of the River Deben, the Mill welcomes visitors from April to November, daily from 11am to 5pm.
