Sizewell B new apprentices and their families visit the station

A group of new EDF Energy apprentices have taken their families to meet the Sizewell B station director and find out more about the next steps of their apprenticeship scheme.

The group of four and their parents got to look around the Sizewell B visitor centre and talk with the station director, Paul Morton, and his senior managers about the station and hear more about the popular apprenticeship and the training ahead of them.

The four new recruits for Sizewell B came from local schools. Brandon Ayers, 20, (Benjamin Britten High School, Lowestoft College) Brer Cornish, 18, (Bungay High School and Sixth Form and Lowestoft College), Suzanne Jones, 18, (Northgate High School and Suffolk New College) and Adele Jenner, 16, (Hartismere School).

Paul Morton, Sizewell B station director said: “It was a pleasure to meet the new apprentices with their families. We recognise that starting the apprenticeship is the first step on their chosen career path and it is important that they can share this with their families.”

The group will officially join Sizewell B on 25 August before they head off to Ullswater in the Lake District on Monday 28 August for an outward bound course where they will meet other EDF Energy apprentices from power stations across the UK. Team building will be encouraged while they take part in outdoor activities which will culminate in climbing mount Helvellyn.

The following week on Tuesday 5 September, they travel to HMS Sultan to start studying, learning basic engineering skills in the first year, before specialising into their trade in the second year.

The apprentice recruitment coincides with EDF Energy’s national campaign to change teenage girls’ perceptions of science and inspire them to pursue science-based careers.

EDF Energy launched #PrettyCurious, a long term programme to encourage more teenage girls to study STEM. The programme aims to give girls hands-on experiences and provide them with opportunities to learn about the wide range of careers available in STEM.

Although the company’s generating stations already have a number of successful female apprentices, EDF Energy wants to attract more.
