Leiston Town home games at Victory Road against Suffolk rivals Lowestoft Town and Needham Market Town will be sponsored by EDF Energy – providing a Christmas and Easter footballing feast.
The deal is part of an ongoing relationship between Leiston Town and EDF Energy’s nearby Sizewell B power station, and its Sizewell C development project.
Just two weeks after the new season’s fixtures were announced, the traditional Boxing Day and Easter Monday games provided Suffolk derbies.
Leiston FC chairman Andy Crisp was delighted with the deal which means Suffolk football fans can look forward to shorter journeys to matches at key holiday times.
“The Boxing Day and Easter Monday matches in the football calendar are always special and significant, and to have two home derbies against our nearest rivals on these key days is something the club and all the fans are really looking forward to.”
“We have a great relationship with EDF Energy and we know the Sizewell B and Sizewell C teams are genuinely part of our fanbase, so this is excellent for us as an ambitious club.”
Sizewell C Community Relations Manager John McNamara said supporting the main local team nearest the Sizewell site was important to the company, which operates the Sizewell B power station, and is taking forward plans to build Sizewell C.
“As soon as the fixtures were released we wanted to step in and be part of these great Suffolk football derbies. We’re really looking forward to them too as our local employees are involved in local grass- roots football and this is a nice way to show our support”.
Leiston’s first game of the season is fast approaching, with the season-opener at home at Victory Road on Saturday, 12 August against newly-promoted Dorking Wanderers.
