EDF Energy recognises Inspiring young people
The Sizewell C project sponsored Young Person of the Year at the 2018 Inspire Suffolk awards held in Ipswich recently.
As always with this event, there were some really genuine and inspiring stories of local people overcoming obstacles in their lives, including unemployment and homelessness.
One such story was that of Sam who overcame both, and through sheer determination joined a training scheme which led to full-time employment – and a place of his own in which to live.
Sam was ably assisted through a difficult period in his life by the excellent Inspire Suffolk scheme. Our picture shows EDF Energy’s Tom McGarry presenting Sam with his Inspire Young Person of the Year award.
Community engagement is key as proposals for Sizewell C take shape
The Sizewell C team has been busy attending annual parish council meetings and workshops, as well as giving presentations and ensuring a presence at key events over the past few months.
Recent updates have been given to the following town and parish councils:
Gt Glemham, Darsham, Aldringham-cum-Thorpe, Theberton and Eastbridge, Yoxford, Ufford, Pettistree, Wickham Market, Aldeburgh, Leiston and Lowestoft.
We have met with individuals and organisations to hear their views on a wide range of issues including construction workers’ accommodation, transport and park & ride, and environmental and ecological concerns and mitigation.
The next date for the diary is the Sizewell C Community Forum. The Forum will be held on Thursday, 26 July, starting at 7pm at The Riverside Centre in Stratford St. Andrews. Our picture shows Sizewell C’s John McNamara discussing the project with Waveney MP Peter Aldous.
Project Director tells conference “efficiencies mean we can construct Sizewell C 20% cheaper”
The Sizewell C team attended the Eastern region’s largest energy conference recently.
Jim Crawford, Project Director for Sizewell C, gave a keynote speech on day one of the two-day East of England Energy Group Conference, held at the Royal Norfolk Showground in Norwich.
During his speech Jim outlined latest thinking on deliverability and the socio-economic benefits the construction could bring.
“Sizewell C will offer thousands of people, including apprentices and trainees, a fantastic start to their working lives.”
On cost he discussed the reasons why low-carbon generation is becoming more competitive. “We are confident Sizewell C can be delivered with a capital cost reduction of 20%”. Jim based his comments on first-of-a-kind engineering costs already absorbed on EDF Energy’s Hinkley Point C project, on replication, on cost-saving efficiencies and other elements including a maturing supply chain and low grid connection costs, all seen to be driving costs down for all low-carbon generation projects.
The Sizewell C team also manned an exhibition stand at the event, which attracted more than 1,000 delegates from across the energy sector, including renewables, nuclear and offshore oil and gas.
Learning about energy and engineering – at the Suffolk Show
An EDF Energy team drawn from the Sizewell C project and the operating station at Sizewell B, were on hand during a busy Suffolk Show to talk about the industry – and potential careers.
The team manned an exhibition stand at the two-day show, as well as a second stand held within the Science and Technology marquee, welcoming 4,195 visitors through the doors.
Youngsters and teenagers alike learned about electricity production, and the options for a career in the energy industry.
Jim Crawford, the Sizewell C Project Director, also spoke at a reception at the event which drew around 100 invited guests, including MPs, County and District Councillors, and members of the landowners and farming community. This year’s Show President, Baroness Byford, also attended the reception.
