Following a successful trial using hydrogen buses to transport Sizewell C workers, we are planning a new depot to support a mixed fleet of emissions-free hydrogen and electric buses.

Planning Applications

  • Bus Depot Proposal

    Our plans for a bus depot at Central Avenue, Ipswich, would support our aim of reducing carbon emissions associated with building Sizewell C by allowing us to refuel, charge and maintain a fleet of 154 low-emission buses.

    As the site is located close to the A14 and most vehicle movements will be outside of peak hours, the quiet, low emission buses will largely bypass residential streets. Around 400 jobs of different levels will be created with the depot, including bus depot management, maintenance engineers, bus drivers, dispatchers and cleaners as well as refuelling and administrative staff.

    A planning application will be submitted to Ipswich Borough Council in the coming months, and local residents will have the chance to share their views as part of the consultation process.

  • Avonmouth Proposal

    Sizewell C is exploring plans to set up a new facility at Avonmouth Docks in Bristol to produce tunnel segments for its new nuclear power station in Suffolk.

    By using rail and sea transport instead of road, the project aims to cut traffic, lower emissions, and reduce local disruption. The proposal would make use of an existing industrial site at the docks, bringing it back into productive use.

    If approved, the facility could create around 350 local jobs at peak construction, supporting long-term employment in the area and contributing to the region’s economy.

    A planning application will be submitted to Bristol City Council in the coming months, and local residents will have the chance to share their views as part of the consultation process.

Consulting to secure Britain's low-carbon future

In 2020, we submitted the application for a Development Consent Order (DCO) to build Sizewell C.

The submission followed many years of engagement and thousands of meetings with stakeholders and local communities whose contributions helped shape our proposals. We will continue to work with the public, local authorities and other organisations to make sure Sizewell C brings as much benefit to the East of England as possible.

Consultation stages

  • Stage 1

    At Stage 1 we consulted on our initial proposals and options for the construction of Sizewell C and associated developments, including an accommodation campus, transport by rail and sea, park and ride, and road improvements.

    Overall 1,298 responses were received at Stage 1 Consultation, which ran from November 2012 to February 2013. The consultation included:

    • Direct engagement with over 4,000 local people;
    • Exhibitions, drop-in sessions and meetings with residents;
    • Presentations to parish and district councils;
    • Meetings with the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, business organisations and chambers of commerce; and
    • Working with groups representing people with disabilities, older people, minority ethnic groups and young people.

    Feedback from this first stage of consultation, along with technical workshops and information from further studies, modelling and assessments will help shape the plans published at Stage 2 Consultation.
