Two-year charity partnership with Sizewell C raises £88k for St Elizabeth Hospice

• Suffolk hospice was first official two-year charity partner of Sizewell C
• Sizewell C staff organise over 30 fundraising activities for the hospice, including football matches, sponsored walks, quiz nights, and operas
• £88,657 makes “significant difference” for hospice and is equivalent to four months of care on Inpatient Unit

Sizewell C has raised a total of £88,657 for St Elizabeth Hospice during its official partnership – providing a vital funding stream for the independent Suffolk charity over the last two years.

In August 2024, Sizewell C chose St Elizabeth Hospice as its first official charity partner, guaranteeing funding for the charity which supports patients and families living with progressive and life-limiting illnesses across East and Mid Suffolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney.

Over the course of the two-year partnership, Sizewell C staff organised or participated in over 30 fundraising events, including football matches between staff, sponsored walks, cycle challenges in Majorca, quiz nights, golf events, and Christmas jumper days.

The £88,657 raised is equivalent to funding four months of care on the hospice’s Inpatient Unit, giving patients access to specialist palliative support from consultants, doctors and nurses.

Personal stories from Sizewell C staff

During the two-year partnership, some of Sizewell C’s own staff had to call on the support of the hospice for their loved ones during the most difficult of times.

Nicole Vale is Training and Competency Lead at Sizewell C. After her grandfather’s cancer deteriorated significantly, the family decided that it would be best to move him into the care of St Elizabeth Hospice.

Nicole said: “Having experienced first-hand the level of care, compassion, and support the hospice provides, I know how vital their work is to families going through some of their most difficult moments.

“Being kept informed and having everything explained clearly made a huge difference to our family. The team were always available to talk and answer any questions with care and understanding.

“I think the partnership between Sizewell C and St Elizabeth Hospice has been incredibly important. Supporting St Elizabeth Hospice helps ensure that more families can receive the same high standard of care and kindness that meant so much to mine.”

Michelle Emmerson-Grey is Sizewell C’s Community Relations Manager. Her father received care at home for nine months, led by her mother, with support from the hospice. When her mother also became ill, Michelle found herself having to care for her dad in his final hours with no experience.

Michelle said: “I couldn’t have done this without the support from the hospice, both on the end of the phone and their visits.

“The support from the hospice made it possible for my dad to be comfortable at home, surrounded by family. I had no experience of end-of-life care, but the hospice was there for every question along the way.”

Archie Walker is Commercial Manager at Sizewell C. Archie’s wife Flora was taken to the hospice from Ipswich Hospital for short-term respite and palliative care and spent the last three weeks of her life there in 2025.

Archie said: “The hospice provided an environment in which she felt incredibly safe, which brought great solace to us all. Areas such as the garden were also of huge comfort and value. They allowed us to spend time together, with Flora, as a family in the sunshine and, for a brief moment, feel normal and together. More than once, we even shared a laugh. That is something I will treasure forever, and it made the most challenging of times that little bit easier.

“I am really proud that Sizewell C partnered with St Elizabeth Hospice. Through the partnership, a significant amount of money has already been raised. I know first-hand that this will help many more people like my wife in their time of need.”

As the charity partnership comes to an end, Sizewell C and St Elizabeth Hospice celebrated the last two years of support with an event at the Sizewell Visitor Centre.

“I’ve witnessed so many amazing fundraising achievements since our partnership started. Sizewell C staff voted to support the hospice as our first charity partner – and it’s clearly meant a lot to our people to do as much as we can to support the work they do.

“The contribution that the Hospice makes to families across this region is incalculable. Our own colleagues have experienced that so poignantly over the last few years too. While our partnership has ended, I would encourage organisations and individuals to find out about the work the Hospice does and to support them if they can.”
